grandmamma

grandmamma
A rather upper-class colloquial form of grandmother, used in the late eighteenth century and throughout the nineteenth century. Lady Kew, in The Newcomes, by William Thackeray, is so addressed by her favourite grandchild, Ethel. The term may still be in use in certain families. ‘Grandmama’, which is presumably a simple spelling variant, occurs in The Middle Man, by David Chandler. It is said to be used in 1970 in an American family of considerable wealth.
